Can anyone suggest where I can get a current Missale Romanum? I know the Vatican sells it -- for about $600, on sale at $264! (I saw it when there last, 2 years ago; however, it was a huge volume; beautiful, but it seemed impractical).
I'm also interested in having a Missal that has chant settings. Does anyone know if this is currently available? Of course, we're all waiting for the bishops...
Failing that, can anyone suggest an alternate resource--i.e., something with chant settings for the current edition, in Latin?
Sadly, if you go to Catholic Book Publishing (the outfit that prints all our sacramentaries, lectionaries, breviaries and other ritual books), the web site never heard of a "Missale Romanum." Irritating...
Update: I wasn't, perhaps, clear enough what I'm looking for.
I want the current Roman Missal, in Latin -- I mean, the Rite of Paul VI, as revised after Vatican II; the same Mass being celebrated mostly in English in the U.S. I want to have this current Roman Missal in Latin, with chant settings.
I would be delighted to have the very latest, third edition, but failing that, I'd be happy with a second edition, if it doesn't cost too much (since it'll become obsolete rather quickly).
I am not seeking an older Missal, a pew Missal, or a Tridentine Missal--but the Paul VI current rite Missal. In Latin. For use on the altar. With chant.
Which edition are you inquiring about, Father? The revised post-1970 edition in Latin, or the 1962 Tridentine edition?

Ach, Father. We discussed this at Gerald's forum which is languishing in cyber-purgatory at the moment. There's a store in England that will start selling them in September for under 100 pounds, IIRC.

Currently, the only company that publishes the updated Missale Romanum is the Libreria Editrice Vaticana. Paxbook.com is probably one of the few online stores that actually carry the item over the internet.

Have you looked at the Adoremus Hymnal? Would that have what you're looking for, since they have an ordinary and the songs for it, including Gregorian.

Fr. Fox there is a four volume edition of the Missale Romanum that I use. They are breviary size ideal for travel or regular use. Its full title is Missale Romanum cum lectionibus. I bought it years ago from Christian Classics. It was published by the Libreria Editrice Vaticana with the date 1977. I suspect you would have to get it from a used book outlet for example abebooks.com

Solesmes publishes an altar-size "Ordo Missae in Cantu" which is not a Missal, but a book with all the chants needed by the celebrant for the Mass in Latin, including all the Prefaces, using Gregorian notation. It's well produced and for what you get, and the size of the book, it's not expensive. You can buy it online at the Solesmes website-

Midwest Theological Forum has been given permission to print the Third Typical Edition of the Missale Romanum - Novus Ordo - and they have done a beautiful job with it - you can see it on their website

The only trouble is the cost ($600). As far as liturgical books go, it would be nice to see MTF being given permissions to pring more liturgical books (like the elusive "forthcoming" english translation of the Missal)

ReplyDeleteFather, the Missale Romanum 3rd Edition (2002) published by Libreria Editrice Vaticana has been out of print for quite some time now. It makes no sense!!!The "gold standard" for chanting the propers is still the Graduale Triplex (1979) published by Solesmes, but alas, the 2002 Missal
ReplyDeletechanged many of the Antiphons. Chant settings of the new texts (at least fragments of them) can be found by scouring web archives of monastic antiphonals from the early middle ages ....too much work for most people. One also needs a workable knowledge of semiology.

ReplyDeleteI know that this is an old discussion, but Midwest Theological Forum is now offering their altar Missal for $400. It is still expensive, but a $200 savings. Their "study edition" could easily be used at the altar as well. it is cloth bound, has ribbons and seems to include tabs that you have to put on the paged yourself. At $150, it may be in some folks price range.
