I detect a bit of sarcasm, Fr. I think it is wonderful. In the short time he has been president he has furthered the cause of peace more than Bush did in eight years. And I don't see anything funny about it. It is a great honor for the president and the United States. Let's be thankful and celebrate.
Our President has not done a single thing to further the cause of peace. Actually, other than actively working at harming our economy and promoting his sick and evil baby-killing agenda he hasn't done anything at all as president.
This just further proves that the Nobel Peace Prize is meaningless. It has become a joke award. One of the first signs of this was when Al Gore won for global warming alarmism - while at the same time hypocritically personally doing much more harm to the environment than the average American.
James -- the peace prize has been a joke for much longer than that. Heck, they gave it to Kissinger of all people. The only prize he deserved was a jail cell...
Oh, James, you are about as closed minded as anyone I have ever read here. You need to open up and allow your mind to see things that you are unable to because of the right wing propaganda that's keeping you from the whole truth. I assume that you consider yourself a Christian. Try acting like one.
I am disappointed when I see people behaving with sarcasm and disrespect toward others, especially toward elected public figures representing our country. It is degrading toward our country itself. Other nations must cringe when they see Americans behaving in such uncivil ways.
We may disagree with others, but it's immature to express that disagreement in an angry or personally degrading manner. Throughout history this has only led to violence.
Many Catholics believe President Obama is evil because he has not worked to legislate against abortion. Since I am not God I can't and won't judge the president or anyone else, but I can say with all certainty that if any human believes he or she is without evil in his/her heart, then such a person is lying or ignorant.
Why not express an opinion in a dignified way that enables respect for your country, your leadership. . .and yourself?
If your comment is directed at this thread, don't you think you may be over-reacting? My post, and the comments that followed, are pretty tame. Surely the President of the United States can take some ribbing and criticism, and our republic will not be the worse for it.
Father, I sincerely did not direct my comments toward what you said. I know your intentions are kind and good. But as a longtime reader I have noticed a trend among your younger readers whose admiration for you is at times expressed in almost an exaggeration of what they take your opinion to be, which is no more than a universal mechanism to identify closely with the admired individual.
This is a very common and usually harmless reaction. However, if a negative opinion is perceived and the admirers take it one step beyond, this is not great.
In a sense, people who mean well can be misled by themselves and even continue to feed on each other's negative reactions. On a grand scale (but never here) it can even segue into mob mentality. It works great for those radio talk show people!
I know you always have the very best intentions as a priest and a pastor. I don't believe the people who post here are troublemakers either. I just believe we should tread carefully down that thin line between civil and disrespectful when speaking of leadership, or in addressing any kind of disagreements among people. Let us question, certainly, and disagree, yes, but in an understanding and empathetic way.
You're doing a great job here, by the way, and I am not criticising, just expressing what one peaceloving grandma thinks.
I am also a grandma. Of course we should speak out against anyone doing harm to our country such as taking over banks, the auto industry, health care bills that no one has read [including Obama], appointing people to micro manage every aspect of our lives, having our young indoctrinated by singing ridiculous songs about "the great Obama", and who knows what else this administration is doing behind the scene? Our children and grandchildren will be affected for the rest of their lives.
As Catholics we have an even greater reason to speak out. This administration, complete with fake Catholics who believe in abortion, think it's okay to murder 4000 babies daily in the USA.
TWO BILLION babies have been aborted worldwide since Roe!! And you think we should all have a cup of tea and discuss this prettily? Wake Up!
The Left is hell bent on destroying everything God has created. Why did they abolish the Commandments???? Let's see, thou shall not kill, steal, covet, idolize... for a start. Basically, everything the Left is for [seen anything decent out of Hollywood lately?] is against what God wants. How can one not be angry and spit out what's on their mind?
We have been silent for far too long.
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host - by the Divine Power of God - cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits, who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Whoa, Bessie!! Either Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity have found this site or someone has been listening to too much radical nonsense on the radio. You need to do a little more research and not depend on crazy radicals. I do believe that the Catholic Church has been left of center for a long time. And thank the Lord that they are. I suppose, Grandma, that you are now enjoying your social security and medicare, brought to you by the "evil" left. And, by the way, when did the "left" "abolish" the commandments. We just need to get all these Republican right wingers to follow them. i.e. Thou shalt not commit adultry. (Especially the ones who spouted their "family values" in all their campaign adds. And Thou shalt not steal. Which they did with my retirement account.
Grandma [or Bessie, whatever floats your boat] does not receive social security or Medicare and from the looks of it there won’t be any such critters when and if grandma is finally able to retire.
Grandma has no need of either Hannity or Limbaugh since Grandma lives in Michigan and has seen first hand what liberal socialists have done and are still doing to her state. One cannot give away the farm and expect to reap the harvest from the crop.
As for “family values” there is a definite lack on both sides thanks to those covet issues I spoke of earlier. I think Pope Benedict XVI said, “Without God there is no conscience.” And Pope John Paul II said something to the effect – As the family goes so goes the nation and the world.- Two exceptionally smart men whom we choose to ignore.
May God Bless.

LOL! funny!
Is it bad that I'm laughing hysterically?

Thankful is most definitely not the thing to be.

What sense of the word 'nice' are you using here? The "cute and sweet" sentimental definition, or the "trivial and insignificant definition?
Actually, to ask is to answer...
