What does it mean...

when you reach into the fridge, and pull out a package of sliced American cheese, from the deli, that is dated a month ago, yet it shows no sign of decay?

Maybe this is why we're living so long -- whatever is preserving our food, is preserving us, as well!

I'm sure the venerable J.R.R. Tolkien would think ill of this; but this doesn't bother me -- not when I consider how many people around the world would love their food to be preserved, only a little more . . .

I remember making fun of the folks who primarily bought organic...

Then again, I made fun of Catholics as well.

Interesting what time and age do to one.

I remember back when I worked in research. A grad student was dataing a young woman who was really into organic foods and a chemical free environment (which seems a bit odd for a chemist). She bought him this big block of everything-free cheese. About two weeks later, they were watching TV and he went to the fridge to get the cheese for some crackers. Not surprisingly, the cheese was covered with multicolored, furry fungi. He brought it back into the living room and hollered, "What's the matter with this organic stuff? Doesn't it have any (expletive) preservatives in it?

Better living through chemistry.

Excuse me top bloke but that would be VELVEETA CHEEZE. Yessireee bob. Um um good. Luv me some velveeta.

But since I am on NutraSystem right now, I just fantasize about it. Chemicals and 66% fat.

I threw away a jar of pickles the other day with an early '04 expiration date. They seemed -- or at least smelled -- quite fresh. That must have been some fine brine.
