Scudding along in southern Ohio

Some friends invited me down to their place in Liberty Township for a Sunday afternoon get-together, so that gave me a launching-pad for the next outing, which -- depending on how late I stay at the Sunday party -- may prove too ambitious.

Here's the itinerary more or less:

Sunday, August 11:

Martinsville and Lynchburg in Clinton County, on the way to Lynchburg and Hillsboro in Highland County; then Seaman and Peebles in Adams County, on the way to Portsmouth in Scioto County for the night. With stops, that should be a four hour journey.

Next day:

Ironton and Burlington in Lawrence County; Gallipolis in Gallia, where I don't think I've ever been; the site of a Civil War battle on Bluffington Island in Meigs County; a pass through small towns in Vinton, on the way to a Welsh Museum in Oak Hill, in Jackson; up through Piketon in Pike, then Chillicothe in Ross and Washington Court House in Fayette, then home. It will be a full day.

For what it's worth, I've driven through all but one of these counties; but as far as I know, I've never stepped out of the car. At any rate, watch this space for further reports!

It's a bit out of your way, but if you go north west just before Piketon, head toward Bainbridge, there is a excellent Amish bakery called the Country Crust Bakery.

4918 State Rte 41, Bainbridge, OH 45612

The bake goods are great. They have monster sized sandwiches at the order window. I recommend the pretzel bread.

Bainbridge is also home to a Dental Museum. Alas it is only open on the weekends and requests. https://www.cradleofdentistry.org/

I grew up in Adams County, and I think that you would find the drive along the Ohio River is much more scenic than the route across route 32 in northern Adams County thru Seaman and Peebles.

You could even stop by the Bentonville Anti-Horse Thief Society marker there!

FWIW, there used to be 4 Catholic Churches in Adams County in the 1970s which were founded by the Glenmary Home Missioners but now only 2 remain (West Union - Holy Trinity and Peebles - Mary Queen of Heaven. They are now Diocesan parishes. The churches in Manchester and Blue Creek are no longer in use.

Enjoy your travels!
